I am still waiting to here--if I do go to the arthritis camp-- It will be 102 days-- the camp starts in July with staff training done mostly by confrance calls and the volunteers arrive a few hours before the campers-- although I do not like the idea of being "forced" to buy snacks for the cabin-- mainly because I had bad experinces with that before-- I bought snacks before for another camp and was told by a few other volunteers that I wasnt allowed to have anything I bought.

Though not the original intent I'm pretty sure this thread basically serves as a bragging/jealousy thread. We post just exactly how many days until camp and are either ahead of the rest or behind everyone else so you're either bragging or jealous.
And it also serves to just make us more jump and enthusiastic than we are and keeping the days rolling by slowly because we are counting every last one of them...

Most of you will already be at camp by the time my countdown reaches an end, I still have 74 days til pre-camp begins. But that's okay, I can just imagine how much fun you guys are already having and it'll get me even more pumped up for camp!
When does your camp end, sting? I usually have to wait a bit before going to camp but my camp also ended later than everyone else.
Mine ends in August - kids go home from the final session on the 10th, and staff stay that weekend for final clean up and staff banquet. We only have six weeks of sessions for kids.
However, my first camp has an extra week this summer, so after camp clean up I am driving to there and volunteering for a week, which I am looking forward to.
oh ok, yeah, my first camp only has 6 sessions this summer I think too. I would love to get a week for my old camps!

if I get accepted, 89 days-- which seems so far away. I know my camp is in July, and only for 5 days but I wish the camp I applied to as a volunteer, would tell me if I was accepted because I could go to a camp I have voluntered at in the past, and I know I would be accepted, but my backup camp, their application deadline is May 1-- the deadline is a firm deadline. I just dont want to apply to my backup camp and they have to tell them I cant make it. Both camps basically have a 1:1 ratio so I dont want to be without a camp but at the same time I dont want to put one camp short a volunteer.

OH! And this week I found out that there is a Camp Opening (work day- clearing brush, setting up the dock, etc) this saturday (tomorow) and I happen to be free and conveniently on the correct side of the state so I'm going to see my new camp TOMORROW!!!!! I am so happy for those here who are able to go camp this year. I wish I could physically be able to go to camp for the whole summer. I miss the times I was able to spend the whole summer at camp. Even though it has been since July 2009 since I been at camp, I miss being at camp as much now as I did the day I left camp in 2009.

I too will have to stop and spend the night somewhere on my way up. I am actually leaving for camp right after the kids leave school on June 7th (36 days), then getting to camp on the 8th. It's kind of nice because it breaks up the drive and because you're staying at a hotel, it's kind of like you're on vacation.

oo, that does sound nice, Teenster! My drives have never been long enough that a hotel would make sense so even if I have to drive 4-5 hours to get somewhere I don't stop at a hotel. Plus even then I wonder if it would feel like a vacation or just torture that I'm that close and not going to be there that night.

Well, June 7th is the last day of school. I will be pretty tired by the time I get on the road. It's a 9 hour drive... I don't want to do that after a full day of teaching! So, I'll leave school at 4:00, stop after 4 or 5 hours of driving, then leave the next morning by 7:00. I will get to camp at lunch time. That will give me a chance to get settled in, and make sure I have all I need for our opening meetings, which start at 5:00.

My drive will either be 14 or 16 hours, so while I could do it straight, I don't think that I want to, especially on a recovering foot, when I have a history of issues with foot injuries.
(Brief history: I sprained my ankle something fierce (mostly tore through two ligaments) working at the camp that I used to direct - eventually I ended up having to have surgery, which was NOT awesome - and I had to fight worker's comp like a beast to get it. I'm very prone to growing extra inflammatory tissue, which is what I had to have surgically removed, so I'm being extra careful not to stress my injury and end up with surgical fun version 2.0)
I'm also trying to decide what route I want to take. I'm going from Ohio to northern Wisconsin. Typically, I'd take the tollway through Indiana, the Chicago area, and up through Wisconsin - the last time I did this drive, I actually drove straight through the night and got to camp around 8 in the morning, which was great, traffic wise.
My other option is to drive up through Michigan, over the bridge, and through the upper peninsula. I'm pretty tempted by this option, since I've never done it before - I've actually never been in the lower peninsula of Michigan. I'd get to do a beautiful drive through the UP, which is exciting. However, it's two hours longer, and I'm not familiar with the area at all.
Luckily, I have about a month to decide...

I have 41 days until I get out to camp, 44 days until supervisor training begins, and 46 days until pre-camp officially starts!!! Summer is creeping up on us!
I am excited for summer even though I havent been offically accepted yet! I have even schuduled my physcial for my back up camp-- my first choice didnt mentioned anything about a physcial-- I dont think they do one since the camp is less then a week. Anyway I will start my TB test tommorrow at my local clinic-- they are way faster then any doctors office-- I am usually in and out in 10 mins.

I worked at robbinswold one summer and did my small craft training at river ranch... I loved the covered wagon unit
oh ok, that makes sense. I've never been to Robbinswold or St. Albans. The covered wagons are pretty awesome. Not sure if you saw Wagon's End or Wagon's West but I suppose it doesn't matter since the wagons are still pretty awesome!
Everyone cross your fingers - my appointment to find out how my foot is healing is in about 5 hours, and what the doc says will definitely affect when I can leave for camp and how long it will take to get there.

its a camp for adults with physcial diabilities-- Association of Horizon-- they only do 1 week of camp. they rent a camp and sometimes dont always get a prime choice of weeks

That's really awesome Mickey!! I've never done a volunteer camp or even a one week camp (except for a couple summers as a camper) so that would be a whole new ballgame, but I do have experience working with people, primarily kids, with disabilities and I love it. I'm an elementary and special education major so in the fall I will be doing my special ed student teaching. At camp I worked in the unit that the campers with special needs were part of and I was a counselor for them for a week. I love those kids. I'm excited because even though I didn't accept the position that was primarily with kids with special needs I may have an opportunity to help with that at the camp I accepted and maybe even lead some of the training or something.
Got decent news from the doctor. Healing well, but not as fast as expected - probably because one of my medications. I'm out of the boot and in a post-surgical shoe splint now. I still have to go back to the boot if I start having pain - I expect that I will have to go back to the boot partway through the day for at least the next week or so.
I go back for a recheck on the 30th, and hopefully will be cleared then. If not, they'll help me find a doc that I can follow up with near camp if I have problems. Probably going to need to see if I can find a place for PT near camp as well.
Glad to hear you're doing healing well Oompa. Hope it continues to go well and you'll be cleared on the 30th. Fingers crossed for you.

Same here Oompa Loompa-- I hope all goes well and you recover in time for camp-- would hate for you to miss any part of camp due to medical reasons-- I know how it feels to have to have to miss camp due to medical reasons-- I had to leave early from camp due to medical reasons-- I was very camp sick to say the least and was missing camp every last minuite of the camp season I left

I have worn a boot-- I have achilles tendonitis and the thing I hate about that boot that it doesnt last too long-- I have gone through a new boot once every 2-3 months-- plus its bloody expensive-- at least my insurance picked up all the costs-- it costs USD $400
I finally picked a day to leave - if I counted right (I'm on strong cough syrup right now) I'll be leaving in 24 days and up at camp in 25, presuming I don't drive 16 hours straight.

Iknow-- I already got my TB skin test--I got it at a clinic and paid cash because my insurance doesnt pay for that-- it was cheap- $5-- it would be cheaper then paying whatever my doctor charges. My insurance doesnt pay for Tetnus vacanations but will pay for the flu shots, Hepitatis B or pnuenomia shots-- weird.
14 days! I'm pretty much ready! Just some little things left to do. I need to organize the precamp jeopardy game I'm making, finish a letter to the AWITs (I still look out for them, even if I haven't directed them for years), buy a pack of frozen mice...
Well good news- My doctor ok'ed me to go to camp and signed off on my physcial-- now all I have to do is wait for the offical " Welcome to camp 2012" packet or e-mail and from a call from my team leader-- equilvent to a UL or Cabin leader position

12 days for me! And really, today's over, so it's more like 11 days. Open house today got me really excited for camp, and for the last few days before precamp starts, I'll be hanging out with an international who's flying in early. It should be fun!
2 weeks until my planned departure. I might try to make the 14 hour drive straight, but it is probably going to take me 2 days.
I'm probably going to have to find an ortho near camp to look at my foot. I'm still having significant pain, and I'm on a drug that slows bone growth and healing. I see my doc once more in a week and a half, but I will be very surprised if he clears me.
I hope that you get better fast and that you make it through the whole summer and not have to go home early-- either volunterly or involuntery-- I had to leave camp early the last time and trust me I took it very hard-- it felt worse then camp sickness-- almost like depression

But of course with that camp I am not really expectiing anything at least from30-45 more days with how slow the camp is-- a part of it has to do with other volunteers waiting until the last second to do anything with their applications-- heck some volunteers apply a few days before camp and some others ignore the deadlines-- like waiting until July 22 to bring their physcial when they are due June 1-- the camp delays everyones acceptance letters because of a good part of the people dont turn in their required paperwork-- from waivers, insurance cards and the like

Thanks! I'll still be creeping around here until precamp starts. It's on a Friday this year, which is different. When I started working, we used to have a CPR/First Aid training day at the Girl Scout council office on the Friday before precamp, then the next day we all moved in to camp. I think that only happened for two years before they switched to Saturday (with CPR/FA training later in the week and on camp). This year we're moving to camp on a Friday so we can get out the next Friday and have a longer break between precamp and first session.
...Oh, perhaps to clarify, I'm picking up the New Zealand UL at the airport in town. Not actually in New Zealand (how cool would that be, though!).

I did spend 2 weeks in Australia with 3 different camp lifeguards a few years ago! That was loads of fun.

school ended here today. our gymnastics summer camp starts on monday. its really odd because back east, school ends at the end of june and camp starts that very next day!

I would have gotten way more done today if I had not slept all day. But I had asthma attacks all night and then had to hit the cough syrup at about 8 this morning, which finally knocked me out.
Finishing up the arts & crafts curriculum binder - hopefully the arts & crafts staff will like it. Then packing will start. Need to go buy some more ink cartridges.
Tomorrow - MUST pick up some med refills, order some medical equipment and have shipped to camp, get new driver's license and renew my registration, and pay some bills.
I leave today! Most of the staff arrives at 4:30, but I got a text late last night (just when I was finally falling asleep; thanks!) asking me to come before noon. So I'll throw my stuff in the car and get out there early!
I'll miss my dog most of all! I found him at camp last fall, and he's everything anyone could want in a pet (well-behaved, trained, sweet, small, cute). I think of him as camp's gift to me.
He's staying with my parents over the summer, and will get to eat (or roll in) EVERYTHING he finds while out on walks, because my mom will let him.

2 weeks and 1 school day until school's out for summer and student teaching is all over!!! I'm starting to ease out of the full responsibility role as teacher after today.
17 days until camp and my first summer as a unit director! Hopefully I'll love it and not just focus on the things that I like about being a counselor that I don't do.
I might be going to an over night camp instead of doing the Day Camp! I found a camp that picks up campers and staff right near my house. Since my car died, I wasn't going to be able to get to a camp so that is why I took the day camp job. I have a car to use but not all summer long. But with this camp, I won't need one!
It's a program director position to and most likely would have to live in the cabin with the kids but I don't care! I will find out more tomorrow!

Minor panic is setting in. Had a bad medication reaction this morning that put me back in bed until 4. Still not feeling great, but up and getting stuff done.
I hope you feel better Oompa Loompa-- I know how it feels to have a reaction to medication and its not fun. It always seems to happen when you need it the least. At least it didnt happen at camp.
It was my fault...for things to work I need to take this specific med between midnight and two. I fell asleep early and didn't wake up to take it until about 5 am, which was too late. Arg.
aww, that stinks, both the too much stuff to do and the reaction. At least you will get to be at camp in 2 days though!!!!

10 more school days! And my master teacher is back today, thank goodness. I was unexpectedly gone for half of Wed and all of Thurs, then she was gone Friday. Then Memorial weekend but she was unexpectedly gone Tues-Friday so it's been a week and a half since I've seen her and over a week since she's been in the classroom. We've had 3 subs in 5 days so the kids are just not settled with it all.
was it really less than 48 hours that the boards were down? It felt like forever but i guess since I posted yesterday morning, it's been less than 2 days...
Well, anyway, 13 days, really closer to 12 by now though! crazy!!
I updated my song book today (yeah, even though I only finished it in the fall) and got my ice breakers, embers (reflective activities typically done toward the end of the day), and initiatives sections done and in the binder. Now to work on running games, sitting games, camp fire skits and other such campfire things, all camp activities, nature activities, and probably another section or two I think of while I'm working on it. Oh, only 13 days until camp, with this day over as I'm going to bed? Yeah, I can do it?!?! hehe At least I'll get the quick reference lists of the names of games down so I can have ideas this summer and work on typing up their directions as I can.

Yeah, still 10 days, but there are now only 4.5 school days left since of course the last day is a half day! And I get to help with all of field day on Thursday, which will be fun now that I know a few more kids from observations, but sad because I'll only get to see my kinders when they come through my station. Hopefully the weather will be nice!

Oh man! So I've known for about the past week or so that the 6th graders at the school I'm doing my student teaching are going to my new camp for a day of ropes course and such. Well, i'm in kindergarten so I never imagined that I would be going but they need more adults and there's also a girl with autism going that I might be able to help more one on one if needed because i've been spending a lot of time with her the last week or so during my special ed observations.
Found out that it was even a possibility today and got signed up to go!! YAY! I've also never been on a field trip as a teacher before so I'm way excited!
6 days until summer camp and 1 hour until i leave for the 6th grade field trip!!!!
I leave on Saturday!!! This means I only have 3 days to finish packing and to get ready for the craziness of becoming ad staff this summer!

Actually I took a job at Camp Mendocino! A Boys & Girls Club camp located 3 hours from San FRAN! I will be a Chief Village Director!
I'm taking the train, staying in Chicago for a night with my fiance, then taking the plane , then a bus. Yes it's plane trans an automobiles times. They offered me more money, my own cabin, and travel reinbursment! I couldn't pass it down. I live in four days!
The only bad thing is that I missed staff training (he didn't care because of my experiences) and that camp would have already been started 5 days before.

It took until 2 am to pack and now it is 6:30 and i have to possibly rearrange some things into 2 smaller containers because that is one heavy suitcase! I managed to get it all into 2 smaller tubs, a heavy gigantic suitcase, and my sleeping bag and pillow. This is a major accomplishment for me, though i also have a garbage bag full of things that will sit in my car and if i decide i need them i can get them when there is a boat run to the landing. Off to shower and get some last minute stuff dine so i can leave in less athan 2 hours!!!!!!!

currently I'm halfway through my fifty hour bus ride out to camp! But once I'm close to camp I'm staying in a hotel for two nights to rest up and get ready for the summer!
I think if I was on a bus for that long, I would proberly sleep at least for 12 hours stright. Good luck on the bus ride and stay safe-- and get some sleep before camp :-D Its never a good thing to arrive to camp so tired that you are about to fall alsleep.

I was at camp all week running lifeguard training. Am back home today, then heading back to camp tomorrow for low ropes training, and then pre-camp officially starts on Sunday, yay!
28 days left and our camp still needs more volunteers or campers will be turned away-- our camp runs on a 1:1 ratio so we need 1 volunteer to each camper-- or in some cases 2 volunteers to 1 camper. If anyone knows anyone who wants to volunteer the week of July 22-28 in Illinois let me know

27 days and Sting-- it seems like the past couple of years, they never have enough volunteers. They normally not accept an average of 15 campers every year. One of the probelms is they like to recurit volunteers from only 1 high school that is about 3 hours away from the camp. Plus the volunteers from that high school for the most part have not been the best volunteers we have had. Many people have suggested to the camp to recurit from other high schools and even college aged volunteers but they have told us to bug off in so many words. I mean they do so much recuritment because the high school they go to, the students only volunteer for 1 year to meet their graduation requirment then leave.
26 days and I got an e-mail stating they may have to cut back on campers and volunteers because they didnt make enough money on one of their biggest fundraisers. The camp is a non for profit and doesnt charge for camp -- for both campers and volunteers because they know that campers and volunteers can afford to pay $500 each.
at camp loving it, it's gorgeous here!

21 days. This camp is really cutting it tight with acceptance letters. I still havent gotten one and I dont feel like waiting until the last second to find out if I am going or not.
20 days-- Just got an e-mail saying everyone wont get an acceptance letter until about July 15-- talk about waiting until the last second to get ready for camp, and the people who are not acccepted will not know until then as well. I almost feel like withdrawing my application because I have an opportyunity to do some stuff with my freinds that week as well

16 days and getting a little worried-- no offical acceptance and no calls from the team leader and calls/e-mails to camp have gone unanswered
15 days until camp and was told today that the people accepted to camp will be told the day before camp starts. This sucks because I know alot of people at camp who have to take time off of work and they have to wait months to get approved for the time off. With the fact the major fuindraiser didnt bring in as much money as expected, I hope they dont screw people over by telling them at the last second they cant go because of money issues.

I've been at camp for 3 weeks, just finished session 1 this morning!
The crazy thing is , in a e-mail a while back, they told us of money issues, but then I know some people on the board, and they said t hey made only a few hundrard dollars less then last year but they wanted to accept 20 more campers this year-- mostly 18 year olds who aged out of the MDA camp, and they want to accept the new campers and kick some of the older campers out-- primerly because some of the high school volunteers want to take care of the younger campers and not take care of campers who are old enough to be their father or grandfather-- they think wiping a butt of an older person is nasty but its ok to do the same with an 18 year old.
14 days and I have sent the camp an e-mail both here and on FB telling them I need to know weather or not I have been accepted-- this is crazy even for them-- had I known this, I would have accepted the position at the arthirtis camp, and would have been accepected over a month ago.
WIth less then a week to go, very few people know if they are going to camp or not-- no acceptance or denial letters or e-mail and I bacially told them I am not going this year-- I dont appreciate not knowing about camp until the last second.
