Ok so I know there's a this or that thread but it'd be nice to know some basics collated and my appologies if this has been done before
what is your favourite camp _________ (or for some questons cos it doesn't really fit, pick your favourite)? :
1. Food 2. Evening activity 3. Arts and crafts activity 4. Waterfront activity 5. Camp fire activity 6. Staff orientation activity 7. Cabins/Tents 8. Sheets/sleeping bag 9. Camp names/real names 10. Way of serving meals (family/canteen style) 11. Something else that I've missed and you think is important :P
So I guess I'll go first
1. Food - spaghetti and meatballs 2. Evening activity - close call between alien roundup and campfire 3. Arts and crafts activity - friendship bracelet making 4. Waterfront activity - waterfight!!! 5. Camp fire activity - repeat after me songs 6. Staff orientation activity - campfire during orientation cos it's real chilled and you can just get to know people in a really relaxed way instead of "MUST GET TO KNOW EVERYONE!!!!! 7. Cabins/Tents - cabins 8. Sheets/sleeping bag - sheets 9. Camp names/real names - real names... (but then again I haven't used a camp name. I just think it'd be a little weird for me but hey, who knows :P) 10. Way of serving meals (family/canteen style) - canteen during staff week, family when kids are there. It's a bit more hassle but at least you can make sure all your kids are eating and drinking enough and nobody is left out 11. Something else that I've missed and you think is important :P

1. Food I really like my camp's breakfast. They usually have a variety of items, it's not just cereal or eggs. Last summer, we had sliders... these were new and AWESOME. The cook got really creative and he made breakfast ones, too.
2. Evening activity Each week we have Leagues for the younger girls. It's kind of like intramurals where there are teams and we play all sorts of games. I like it because I got to hang out and play with not only the girls in my age group, but also girls I wouldn't normally get to do activities with.
3. Arts and crafts activity I don't really have a favorite Arts and Craft activity because I'm never really there. Though, my camp does jewlery and glass. It's really cool to see the campers' projects.
4. Waterfront activity I'm old school, and I love canoeing. I don't know, I guess it's something about being out on the lake with a few people. It's fun.
5. Camp fire activity I love it when campers lead activities at a camp fire. They tell stories or sing songs... it doesn't matter.
6. Staff orientation activity At a previous camp I loved how we did diversity training. We played some really cool games showing how different, but really how the same we all are. It's pretty good at my current camp, Bob Ditter leads it... and he's not leading it viva video, he's actually there.
7. Cabins/Tents I really like both, though right now I'm thinking tent. We had a really cool thunder storm last night, I was thinking about how neat it would have been to be in a "floating" tent.
8. Sheets/sleeping bag Both... again. With GS, I would take my sleeping bag and put a sheet on top. Now, since I live in an actual house, I put sheets on the bed, and get the sleeping bag out for cold nights.
9. Camp names/real names Right now, I'm at a camp with real names... though a lot of people at my camp call me Teenster. I loved GS camp names, I'm not sure why. Though now, I love the fact that I'm one of the few staffers who has a nick name.
10. Way of serving meals (family/canteen style) Cafeteria style is the way to go! You don't waste as much food that way. Food that leaves the kitchen, can't go back. If the food never leaves the kitchen, you aren't as wasteful. One of my favorite lunches is the "pot luck" where it's all the left over stuff, and you don't know what you're going to get.
11. Something else that I've missed and you think is important :P I know others don't like it, but I love uniforms! It shows a sense of camp pride!

1. Food - Breakfast is always good, and tends to be more vegetarian friendly! :-) We always have at least 2 alternatives to our meals as well, which is nice.
2. Evening activity - Definitely camp fire
3. Arts and crafts activity - Photography, which is kind of cheating, so I'll also say friendship bracelet making and/or t-shirt screen printing
4. Waterfront activity - kayaking and free swim.
5. Camp fire activity - I love it when the kids come up with their very own skit to show off something funny, odd, or a hidden talent. also when we have the campers dress up as a counselor and vice versa.
6. Staff orientation activity - meal times - switching it up at tables and having discussion questions while you eat and get to know eachother. Also, showing the first time counselors the camp video and having an old alumni talk about that particular camp.
7. Cabins/Tents - Cabins!
8. Sheets/sleeping bag - Sleeping bag until it gets too warm for it.
9. Camp names/real names - I like my real name, "Layton" but don't mind if others have camp names.
10. Way of serving meals (family/canteen style) - Family style.
11. Something else that I've missed and you think is important :P - Self expression, and seeing the kids open up to doing the same thing themselves.

1. Food - I love our Sandwich Central lunch day! It's soooo good. I look forward to it all week!
2. Evening activity - I've usually been at the barn watching my kids ride in the evenings, but aside from that, I like evening swimming times! And shower parties. And dance parties! Smaller, in-unit ones, that is. The big all-camp ones are often nothing but trouble.
3. Arts and crafts activity - Making sock creatures! Can't get enough of that. Making candles is also pretty cool.
4. Waterfront activity - I really like playaking. Gives some alone time to float around, without crunching my knees into a canoe, where my foot will invariably fall asleep.
5. Camp fire activity - Songs that have been adapted with funny words.
6. Staff orientation activity - CB training! Oh, how I love it...
7. Cabins/Tents - I loved my big lodge that I've been in for the past few years. But tents are awfully nice, aside from the dampness!
8. Sheets/sleeping bag - I always bring a sleeping bag with a sheet. It works for every situation!
9. Camp names/real names - Camp names, all the way. When I go out with my camp friends, even if they use real names for each other, they call me Indigo.
10. Way of serving meals (family/canteen style) - I like family style, it lets you get to know the kids a little more, aside from just the ones in your own unit. But I'm definitely warming up to canteen style, after having it for breakfast and lunch the whole time I've been on staff!
11. Something else that I've missed and you think is important :P - Hmm... There's so much, really! Down-time, nature, accomplishments, and just all the random funny things that come out at camp!

1. Food: well, dining hall food is probably sloppy joes, or tacos or spaghetti, or grilled cheese and tomato soup. Cookout food- hot subs, foil dinners, and i'm sure there's something else but I'm blanking on it. OH! Pie-iron pizzas!
2. evening activity: campfires and night hikes, or if this counts- serenade (where the staff without res campers walk around to each unit and sing slow songs to the kids while they lay in bed). The only part I don't like about serenade is that a lot of nights it comes too soon to the little girls unit (first unit they go to) and we don't have time to get settled so the girls are all either too wound up or not ready for bed so they need to get up again and finish after serenade (partially ruining the point of getting them to sleep!)
3. Arts and crafts activity lanyards probably, but only for kids in 3rd grade or older or else you spend entirely too much time teaching and they accomplish nothing, not even a confidence boost which would make it worth it. For the little kids, masks or painting or something. Beads are fun too (pearler/iron beads, and making jewelry).
4. Waterfront activity by myself or with kids that are old enough- funyaking for sure. With the littles it would have to be swimtime (though rowboats aren't bad either but take FOREVER to get going)
5. Camp fire activity slow songs, and staff skits. Some kid skits are fun too.
6. Staff orientation activity embers activities, and hanging out
7. Cabins/Tents cabins
8. Sheets/sleeping bag sleeping bag because I move every week. When I did OE and stayed in the same bed for 7 weeks I liked my sheets.
9. Camp names/real names camp names!
10. Way of serving meals (family/canteen style) family style
11. Something else that I've missed and you think is important :P Kids Are Awesome!!! Ok, so you didn't miss that point, but I just wanted to say it, as I am currently campsick and worksick (I work in a daycare and I miss those kids after only being off 1 day!)

1. Food Make-your-own-sandwich-day. It's my favourite meal, because I like to have a bit of control over what I eat once in a while. My favourite dessert is macaroons or cheesecake.
2. Evening activity Camp-wide games like Escape from the Zoo or Camp-Wide Clue.
3. Arts and crafts activity Mini paddle painting! We have these cute miniature canoe paddles (about the length of your forearm) that we let the kids paint.
4. Waterfront activity Just staff: boardsailing/windsurfing With campers: swim to one of our islands
5. Camp fire activity The slow songs
6. Staff orientation activity Free time! I like the relaxed atmosphere and getting to know new staff members.
7. Cabins/Tents Tents! I'm an outdoor camper.
8. Sheets/sleeping bag Fitted sheet on my air matress, and then a sleeping bag. It was way too cold last summer to think of sleeping without a sleeping bag and multiple blankets. I'm indoors this summer though, so I'm thinking sheets and a blanket.
9. Camp names/real names Real names, but I am ok with nicknames (especially when there are multiple people with the same name!)
10. Way of serving meals (family/canteen style) I like buffet style, but my camp has used family style in the past, and we're trying it out again this summer. Hopefully I'll like it!
11. Something else that I've missed and you think is important :P I can't wait to get back to camp, school seems like such a waste of time right now.

1. Food BLT day. You can smell the bacon cooking all around camp. You don't usualy see all the program people at lunch, usualy we would get busy and just have to come in after lunch, but on BLT day we made sure we were there.
2. Evening activity Counselor hunt. It was my favorite as a camper, cit, and staff.
3. Arts and crafts activity To pick one would be impossible. To do by myself, it would have to be hemp braceletes, lanyards or necklaces. To do with Cits/Lits/Older cameprs it would definately be hotglue and popsicle stick time (all kids are good with popsicle stick time, but something about doing it with the older campers just makes it extra fun. To do with little boys would be a toss up between paint each other, and drawing pirate scenes, there is always one boy who draws sharks with lasers on their heads. To do with little girls would have to be modpodge tissue paper mosaics, because it's time consuming, fun and its hilarious to sit and talk with little girls.
4. Waterfront activity. Row boating and fun board.
5. Camp fire activity tending to the fire and taps.
6. Staff orientation activity As Crafts person it was definatly clean and organize crafts center time. As Asst. Director it is definatly game time.
7. Cabins/Tents Cabin
8. Sheets/sleeping bag Sleeping bag and blanket
9. Camp names/real names Camp names
10. Way of serving meals (family/canteen style) As kitchen staff I would say canteen, less mess.
11. Something else that I've missed and you think is important: Sing after every meal or not? for me it's singing

Oh sweet...I'm going to do one for summer camp and then for oe too since they are totally different.
For Summer:
1. Food One day a week we have cookouts where we have either hot dogs or hamburgers done over the grill along with stuff like baked beans, potato chips, watermelon ect... I love it!
2. Evening activity Every Friday evening we have this huge party where we're all together as a camp and just having a huge party. Some kids be playing basketball, some volleyball or whatever, we have the rock wall going, there's dance parties under the pavilion, kids are playing ga-ga, some playing football and soccer...all type of stuff going on. We also have our camp store open. Its sweet because there's a ton going on but we're all in the same area and one of the few chances we all as a camp get to hang out and play around. We also have our closing ceremony that night.
3. Arts and crafts activity I'm not a arts and crafts person at all.
4. Waterfront activity Free Swim. I don't get a chance to get in the water but its fun entertaining the kids in the water, taking pictures and such.
5. Camp fire activity Skits and Songs
6. Staff orientation activity I like the horseback trail ride we do as a staff. I love animals so its fun just being with the staff, on a horse, going on a trail ride on the back property.
7. Cabins/Tents Cabins for sure. I slept in a tent once last year and that was during staff training.
8. Sheets/sleeping bag Both
9. Camp names/real names Real names
10. Way of serving meals (family/canteen style) Family Style. As a counselor, its really a good way to monitor what everyone is eating, how much they are eating, and all those good things to keep everyone healthy. We always have a salad bar (breakfast bar in mornings) too which is also very nice.
11. Something else that I've missed and you think is important :P I just can't wait for summer to be here, I miss it so bad.
For OE: 1. Food Nachos...absolutely love nachos day.
2. Evening activity Toss up between square dance and campfire. Nighthikes are pretty awesome too.
3. Arts and crafts activity Arts and Crafts and I just do not get along.
4. Waterfront activity I'm never at the waterfront during OE but I guess boating.
5. Camp fire activity Skits and songs...especially since they are new to the kids unlike in the summer when the kids have for the most part seen the same skits/songs over and over.
6. Staff orientation activity We don't really have a staff orientation for OE but we do go out to dinner and just hangout which is pretty fun.
7. Cabins/Tents For OE, I live in staff housing.
8. Sheets/sleeping bag Both still.
9. Camp names/real names Real
10. Way of serving meals (family/canteen style) Family
11. Something else that I've missed and you think is important :P OE is so fun although its quite different from the summer. Its much easier as a counselor because there's parents and teachers there with the kids, so I can be a little more relaxed and laid back. Plus the bond between staff for OE is so much stronger, because there's only like 5 or so of us instead of 40-45 like in the summer, we get to know eachother a little better and we have tons of fun together. I start OE in about 3 weeks, so pumped!

1. Food: Scones: our chef makes a mean scone 2. Evening activity: Love too many, but I enjoy Clue (live action version of the board game "Cluedo" for some) or Gold Rush 3. Arts and Crafts: Ceramics, though I make a mean friendship bracelet 4. Waterfront: Fishing 5. Campfire: I havent seen it done in years but at my old camp wed have campfire every night and the counselors would start telling a story and then the next night a different counselor would continue the story and it would keep going night after night. 6. Staff orientation activity: we do a lip sync to prepare the counselors for how seriously campers take our lip sync at camp and is always awesome 7. Cabins less likely to get soggy 8. Sheets its easier to control your temperature 9. camp names or real names: good things can be said for both but I have always used my real name 10. Way of serving meals: family style, we are a family 11. Camp clothes - I feel everyone has certain clothes that are iconic for longtime staff members. mine would be poncho sweatshirt and detroit tigers hat.

I love learning about traditions to the camp I am at. The history is important to me.
