I always have a few sets of LED string lights (think Christmas lights) hanging up in my room. I use them as night lights since they aren't very bright but still bright enough to allow me to get to a light switch or as a reading light. It occurred to me today that maybe I should bring them to camp with me? I figure if I get one of the younger groups we can hang them over the bathroom door (I think there are bathrooms attached to the cabins) with some masking tape. They don't get hot at all and use next to no energy (since they're LED) and they shouldn't keep anyone awake at night since they're a very soft light. I feel like this would be less annoying than leaving the bathroom light on since usually there are like 2 people that have the bright light shining in their face all night and you can't see anything else in the room...
Thoughts?

I approve! I use the bathroom lights in my younger kid cabins, usually the toilet stall light so it's not shining in someone's eyes, but there's always one kid who protests it. I bet they probably wouldn't protest those lights nearly as much!

However, I have a suggestion (depending on cost and travel/packing space and random other factors) that you just buy some when you get there. That really depends and is totally up to you (duh).

oh and now I'm seriously contemplating getting some for my cabins. The only problem is having to move them every week. hmm

haha, before I make silly suggestions like buying Christmas lights in June, I should probably look to see if the stores are carrying them...

One thing to consider, much as I think it is a brill idea, is will the cabin you will be staying in have electricity? When I was at Main Idea, it ran the same way as walden which meant that after the first night the electricty to the cabins was shut off.

One of my bunks did that last summer. I think it went over well. I know that the counselor took them down half way through the summer, but I don't know why.

I'm pretty sure that all of your bunks will have electricity, but it might be limited. Our bunks only have two outlets (four plugs). That sounds like plenty of outlets for the summer, but when every camper wants to charge their iPod, four plugs aren't enough!

Yeah but most cabins were built before the days of ipods \:\) so that wouldn't have been a consideration - I cant imagine being somewhere that allows the kids to have them, but I can imagine that if rest hour is QUIET (or even silent) then I can imagine that it would make that alot easier to achieve!

Yeah... our cabins were all remodeled over the summer and have electricity. They told us to bring Ipods and speakers for rest hour and bed time and I'm allowed to have a hair dryer so I'm assuming the electricity doesn't get turned off. You can usually find them in the home decor part of some stores like target or walmart since they aren't technically christmas lights, they're decorative lights, however they're usually about 12 bucks a string instead of 3. I love them though so I guess I'll bring em and just leave them in my car if it isn't ok.:)

I used to decorate my dorm room with fairy lights - I miss that at home!

oh ok, I just looked online at Walmart and they weren't selling them. However, they might be and I just didn't look thoroughly enough.

Yeah, I sometimes wish my kids were allowed to listen to music during rest hour. It would make it a whole lot easier to get them to be quiet! However, in general I am a fan of not having them there. I will bring my iPod and a little speaker for playing like once a week in the cabin, maybe towards the end of the week so it can be a reward for a good beahving cabin (considering it's not really something we're supposed to do) so I won't do it a lot with a group. It's not like me playing 30 minutes a week of camp appropriate music that isn't sung by us is going to get me fired (or take away the integrity of keeping the electronics away) considering we are allowed to do it at the dance party! ooo, I've got to talk with the UL of the special needs groups (they host a dance party each week) to see if she can just keep it to the littles and the Inclusion (special needs) because then it's something that they can do that the big kids can't. They don't have anything else like that. Sure the big kids never go to Fairyland but that's because they don't want to, not because they can't.

Hmm, I'm kind of broke so I probably shouldn't get any lights. \:\) But I want to!

I wish our cabins had electricity, it would be so nice to see at night without a flashlight! However, I use christmas lights on the porch of the nature center before night hikes, so I can slowly adjust everyone's eyes to darkness without causing a panic.

I'd totally put them up on the bathrooms if I could! So much better than finding your way in the dark!
