My first summer (I was 18, then turned 19 have way through) I started out really shy. It's always been difficult for me to make friends, especially in new places. Though at camp I had to really step out of my comfort zone. My advice, like Indigo, is to make sure that you have fun and you do things you would never imagine doing. This is great for the campers to see you participate, but it also is great for you. Just by working at camp, I've picked up a few new skills, like golf, playing GaGa, improved my ping pong skills, and I've learned a few new dances. Being able to try new things and not worry about what others think will then help you in the "real world."
